Meet Flavors of East Africa

When Alvin “June” Olwino arrived in San Diego in 2001 no place existed to get authentic East African food. As a result, he began making it himself and by 2005, Flavors of East Africa was born. June began with selling food at local farmers’ markets and in 2009 was able to open the doors to his restaurant. For the last twelve years, June has created delicious food at both his brick-and-mortar location and at farmers’ markets throughout the county.

Since 2001, June has seen the number of places to eat East African cuisine grow. He loves that Flavors of East Africa can be a space to spread the word about how delicious East African food is and hopes their establishment helped to pave the way for this food genre. June believes their food unites people since their customers represent a wide demographic range.

Flavors of East Africa continues to expand and grow by selling at pop-up events when possible. They know that collaboration is key and look forward to the possibility of a future in-person Black Food Experience event with multiple vendors. With their fingers crossed, they will be able to share their yummy home-cooked meals at Coachella, if it is held at the end of this year.
